Though my time with Echo Co. from I believe from 86'to88' was all in peacetime,I was still proud to serve in the 5th Marines and felt fully capable of anything that was to come down.I would also like to complement each and every person that went through the experience of Vietnam and even I noticed a man from the frozen chosin'......a job well done!!!!

Just wanted to say hello to all my old friends from E/2/5. I was with Echo Company from the time we formed up in Camp Pendleton. I went over with Echo when we left the states from Long Beach. I was in the 1st platoon. Our platoon commander was 2/Lt. George ROBISON. Staff Sergeant Chuck DUREE was our platoon sergeant until he received a temporary commission. DUREE left us in Okinawa prior to us leaving for Vietnam. I moved up from platoon guide to platoon sergeant. I was with Echo when we made our landing in Chu Lai on April 1966. I stayed with 1st platoon and became the platoon commander after ROBISON left to go to 3/1. I remained as the platoon commander until I left in September of '66. I was transferred to 3/1 too. I rotated out of country in Feb '67. I went back for another tour in Jan '70 and left in Jan '71. I stayed in for 30 years and retired in September '88. When I retired I was the Depot Sergeant Major of Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. I currently live and work in San Diego, CA. Look forward to hearing from anyone who I was priviledged to serve with in E/2/5. I would very much be interested in hearing from Monish SHIPP, Jim McKELVEY, Lee DIX or Pete TAITANO. We were all sergeants together in Echo. SEMPER FI, MARINES!

In April this year, I stumbled on the articles at MSNBC.COM concerning the fall of Sigon. After thirty years of keeping Vietnam in a box something was triggered ans set my feet on a quest quest that ultimatly led me to here.
I served with Echo Co. 2/5 1st Mar. Div. in late 69-70. "Rompin, Stompin, Hell, Death, and Distruction" Remember that on the sign at An Hoa? I also remember a Doc that could never seem to get it right. Throw the granade first then hollor Li Di or was it the other way around? Think this only happend once in the Arizona Terretory. My MOS was 0331. Some people referred to me as Gook because I always carried a small bag of rice and I tended to sit like one. I have memories of people like Burkett, David Parker, Pruette, someone named Pounds, Farber, Lt. Pereira, Buddy Bunt, Pig Pen, and so many other. I have over the years often wondered what happend to many of you. Especially Parker, Pruette, Pounds, and Farber. God its been a long time.

I am looking for anyone who knew my brother CPL. George Allen Alford Jr.(Tex). He was KIA July 31,1968. He was with 3rd Platoon of Echo Co.,2nd Battalion,5thMarine Reg. of the 1st Marine Division. He was in Operation Houston III near Thuc Thien on June 30,1968,Op. Houston IV and Op. Mameluke Thrust II in Quang Nam Province near An Hoa. It was here that he was KIA. I was with the U. S.Navy Seabee's NMCB4 Charlie Co, one of 32 men who built the original Liberty Bridge in 1967. I just a video of Joe Kinder now a retired Major who was there for 45 days. The video was made by him and his son just converted to CD format. About 2 hours ago I was talking with Joe Kinder and reminiscent about his and my time there at Phu Loc 6 AKA Liberty Bridge AKA Arizona territory. Who can tell me what Marine Battalion did 2/5 relieved. I am trying to locate someone who remembers the names of two men who went out on an LP and did not make it home. I have a web site with pictures of the liberty bridge and want to have their names listed with the men who paid the ultimate price for that bridge. Time frame June July 1967. I served with e co 2/5 from 10/68 to 10/69 as a machine gunner. When I got to An Hoa my squad leader was Leo Aguirre. Leo was from Los Angeles Calif. The team leader was Don Jhonson. The gunners were BURT AND ROYSTON. I was better known as TWIN. My twin brother stayed in Okinowa and I was sent to Nam because I was 15 min older. I served with Echo Co with a machine gun team and then as a radioman from July 1970 to Feb 1971 when the unit was re-deployed. I then transferred to H&S Co, 2/1 and got a rear job. Names are difficult to remember. I was on the patrol in Aug 70 when Don Hilliard was killed while we humped out of a rice paddy near Liberty Road. I recall nights standing bridge watch at Liberty Bridge capping off rounds at whatever floated in the river. I recall humping the Que Sons and finding an NVA camp with discarded rifles and medical gear. I appreciate the efforts to establish this site and hope to make contact with former marine buddies. I graduated from MCRD San Diego with Plt 1178 in Dec 1969.

Served with Golf Company 2nd Bn, 5th Marines from October 1966 - November 1967. Most of that time we were based out of An Hoa, except for combat operations.
Was WIA on 17 December 1966 (gunshot wound, chest, Phu Loc 6), 6 July 1967 (grenade shrapnel, left knee, Nong Son) and 15 August 1967 (punji stake wound, foot, Antenna Valley).
Most likely would not be alive today were it not for the superb combat leadership of then Lt. Bill Buchanan, Doc Thacker, Doc Salisbury, Doc LeGarie and other magnificant Marines and Corpsmen.
Thirteen months was an entire lifetime. That time and those Marines have had more positive effect on me than all others.

For those of you who served with my brother, Lt Paul Bertolozzi. My family has donated the flag you signed to the USMC Command Museum at San Diego, Ca. You may be interested to know that my two sons, 20 yr old twins, joined the Marines in the fall of 2001. One is an armorer stationed in Okinawa. The other is a large engine mechanic currently deployed in Kuwait. In addition, my daughter's husband is in the Army, also deployed in Kuwait.
Hi, This is an update on Paul's nephews. Brandon returned safely from the first phase of the Iraqi war and is now at his duty station in North Carolina. Brett just returned from a deployment in the Philipines. He was promoted to Corporal and is still stationed in Okinawa. My son-in-law also returned safely from Iraq. Because he was with an engineering group, he was able to hook up with Brandon when they were both in Kuwait. I also want to thank all of you who have shared your memories of Paul with me and my family. We have learned so much about Paul through you. I'm thinking of going to the reunion in August.

I was honored to serve as CO of E 2/5 from January to July 1997.
I stayed in the regulars until 1969--my last tour was in Oakland, CA doing casualty calls, going to funerals, giving out free flags, etc. I saw the costs of the war on American families up close. I volunteered to go back on active duty for the Gulf War and they took me in my old age. I spent the war in the rear with the gear, with the Marine Corps Battle Assessment Team. I saw the same courage and commitment by Marines that I saw in Vietnam. I have worked mostly as a college professor since I got out. I am presently working at writing for a living--I am finishing a big book on the Gulf War. I look forward to writing about Vietnam, specifically about the lost summer of 1967, and about some of the biggest and most costly battles of the war that has not even made it into the official history of the First Marine Division. It has been extraordinarily comforting to me to make contact with so many Marines from Vietnam, most of whom I last saw when I was helping put them on a medevac helicopter. I am particularly happy to see than many Marines whom I believed too badly wounded to survive did in fact do so and are doing very well. It has been very interesting to read individual accounts of battles and to be able to supplement them with my account. I wrestle too with the Vietnam dreams on occasion. Mercifully, they come less often now. But there is a good side too. Deeply embedded in my brain is the image of young Americans, somewhere in the world and against all odds, unafraid to commit themselves for for their fellow Marines, for a cause, and for their country. I thank all of you who served: you made it possible for me to come home. Hardly a day goes by that I don't think of E 2/5 and of being part of a team that could do anything and go anywhere--all we needed was enough ammo and water--and a weapon that would shoot.

My daughter just sent me this site and I recognize many names listed. I was in Hotel 2/5 2nd Plt 2nd Squad (Aug. 66 to June 67). Recall vividly many ops.. Prarie, Tuscaloosa (point plt crossing the river), Hastings, Mississippi etc. Got the nickname Lucky on Op Prarie when walking point and hit by sniper through the steel pot and fiberglass liner. Knocked out and Medevaced to Dong Ha. Dr. said 1/4 inch different trajectory and I wouldn't be there. Letters from home in my helmut liner provided the margin of space that saved me. Hope all is well with all my Nam Brothers. When we came home PTSD wasn't even known about. We just internalized, sucked it up and did the best we could. I made the transition after some difficult times and I pray that y'all have also. Semper Fi my brothers.

Echo Company - Third Herd 69/70 - 0311.Started out as ammo humper in third squad. Left country as company radio operator. It's been thirty years but some of the memories are very vivid. I think only about the good times - and there where some. Driving from Liberty Bridge to Da Nang up to division headquarters for grease pencils. Capt just wanted to get the Gunny a quick R&R. he tried to drink China Beach dry in one afternoon!

I'm trying to locate any one who may have known my cousin, Richard A. Buttery. He was with E 2/5 in Korea and as far as I can tell, he made it through Inchon, the "Frozen Chosin" and was KIA on the 3rd of June, 1951, when his platoon assaulted enemy hill-top positions near Kwangchi-ryong. His platoon leader was 1st Lt Angus Deming.
On Memorial day, 2009, in Sharon Springs, New York, the town will be dedicating a memorial in his honor. His two sisters and family as well as myself and my family will be attending. Here is a link to the newspaper article:

MY MARINE FRIEND
I was cruzing town in the car of my "DREAMS". It was a 57 convertable Real "SWEET" and So "MEAN". That's when I got my draft notice and ended up in the"US MARINES". That's where I met my buddy Joe Jordan. We were both farm boys and dirt "SMART" but bit by bit that Marine DI took us"APART". We made it "again" said my friend as the next obstacle"began".When the force march was over we graduated. "OLE Joe" went his way I went"MINE"not knowing If we would meet again in "TIME". I went home proud to be a"US MARINE"but afraid of what VIETNAM would "BRING". When the plane landed in DaNang. All I could hear for 3 days was the sounds of "BIG GUNS" and Jets returning from their"BOMBING RUNS".On the forth day I was sent south of"HUE"to"ECHO 2/5.We were guarding a bridge over a river, I know not the "NAME". I was surprise to see my buddy Joe Jordan"AGAIN". We shook hands and hugged like Father and"SON". At the same time not taking our hands off our "WEAPONS". That night we were "OVER RUN" The bridge was blown up and The TET of 1968 had "BEGUN". Joe and I were scared to death,but still alive at "MORNING SUN". When the smoke and fog "CLEARED". We were at the foot of the Bach Ma mountains so tall and so"NEAR". It was the 3rd of Apirl the date I remember so"WELL". Because we were caught in all kinds of"HELL"We could hear the thump of morters all"AROUND". As they went overhead and hit the"GROUND".It was so "INSANE"before I knew it my buddy had taken a snipers bullet to the "BRAIN". They said I took my M-16 and charge the"TERRAIN". Knowing I'd never see my buddy alive "AGAIN". Late at night when I wake up in a bed of Sweat and"FRIGHT". My friend Joe said stay KOOL"AL"everthings"ALRIGHT". In 2002 when I found his"GRAVE". We sobed and talk about the"GOOD OLE DAYS". Joe said he would save me a place in "HEAVEN" because for 34 years I'd been threw"HELL". This is a poem I wrote while going threw the PTSD treatment programs in 2003-4 in Topeka,Kansas and Waco, Texas VA Hospital It was part of my recovery. It was a long time before I could read it aloud and not break down. I was with ECHO Co.2ndbn 5th Marines 1st Marine Div. I was in country from January till July of 1968. I remember a CPL.Bohm he was a squad leader or platoon leader. I left Vietnam in July of 1968 because of malayria. I stayed in Japan and Okinawa for 6 months recovering. Before coming back to the states. I'M in the process of getting a grant to build museum and "VET PARK"in Missouri.South of Whitman Air Base east of Kansas City,Missouri.

I went to boot camp in "Hollywood" San Diego. I was in the Echo 2/5 from Dec. 66 to Jan. 68. I do beleive I was in 2nd Plt. You could fine me on POINT most of the time, I did carry the radio my last month there. I was one of the those guys who like to go into those holes in the ground and see what I could find. With some of the things I did over there I still wonder how I made it back all in one peice. Any way I got maried in May of 68 and had to great kids, one each. I got out of the Marines in 72 and went to work for the Gov. I retired in Oct. 98. I now work for Home Depot. Boy is that fun. Hope to hear from some of you guys. I don't remeber names to well, but faces I never for get or the things we did. Good luck to all of you out there. Keep you feet and power dry.

I joined Easy Co. on or about 24 Nov 1950 at the Chosin Reservoir. I was a radio operator with B-1-11 when they sent me as a replacement for B FO 2 forward observer team. I was eventually evacuated with frostbite from Hagaru on Dec. 5. After leaving the hospital I spent the remainder of my enlistment at Quantico. I was discharged in Nov 1952.

That is me in the forefront. I arrived at An Hoa in March 1967 while Operation NewCastle was going on. I was in 60mm mortars with a great bunch of guys. Those of you that made the DC reunion in 1988 know what a fabulous time we had. Those of us that were fortunate enough to have survived The Big One, I hope that you are all doing well and in good health. I retired in May 1998 after 30 years with Bell Atlantic, most of it as a Construction Splicing Supervisor. I have a son in college at Maine Maritime Academy in Maine and a daughter that is a senior in high school. Both played a lot of sports and brought me a lot of enjoyment. SEMPER FI.

Hello. My name is Christine Molony. I am looking for anyone who might have served with my Uncle. He was Lance Corporal Joseph E. Davis Jr. He served with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Division. He was a riflemen and a Grenadier. Joey was KIA on November 3, 1968 in Quang Nam Province, by Frienly Fire. My mother and I would love to hear from nyone who served with him. I am only 18 years old, and would like to be able to feel a sense of knowing my Uncle.
I served in Echo 2/5 in April& May of 1965 . In MAY the entire unit was shipped to Okinawa at which time we became India 3/9 .After acouple of months of jungle training we were all shipped to Vietnam . I served with Echo 2/5 from 1985 to 1988. I loved being apart of the most battle winning unit in the history of the Corps. I served as the company Forward observer, machine gun team leader, and mortar section leader. I have studied the history of the 5th Marines in the Arizona territory. It made me very proud to part of the best. My prayers and thanks go out to the men who served during the war. You were the best of the best.

I was on Operation Essex. I was shot the evening after Corporal Kretsinger stepped on the booby trap. All I could find of him was a small piece of his skull and placed it into a small baggie with a tag. After we crossed the creek, hell broke loose. I was shot in the upper right thigh while I was returning fire from the mortar attack. Two guys in front of me fell when hit and then I caught sight of a NVA on a burial mound in the corner of the paddy. I fell on my back and was unable to get up and was stuck in the mud. This NVA was the one who shot me. I could still hear them shooting our guys along the paddy so I was able to throw three fragmentation grenades up onto the mound. Things then quieted down. I tried to get up and fell because of my wound. That's when I fell next to a fellow marine who had a .45 with just a couple rounds left. This is the last thing I remember for several hours. The next thing I remembered was being put on my poncho and floated down the creek to the LZ. Later four of us were loaded on a chopper for first med Da Nang. When we arrived, I was the only one alive. I received a purple heart for this wound. I don't remember the names of the fellow marines except for Corporal Kretsinger. While I was in the hospital in Yokuska, Japan I met one of the marines that helped put me on the chopper in Nam. He stated that they had mentioned something about a Silver Star for me. I said I didn't want anything for killing and told him not to tell them where I was. In retrospect if this was in fact true, I wish I had taken the medal. He told me that I had killed 12 NVA when I tossed the grenades. I hope to hear from someone who was on that operation in this area on November 8, 1967.

I was senior corpsman for Echo from 6/68-12/68. I arrived in in Phu Bai, went to Langco Bridge, then went on ops around An Hoa. In 12/68, I was transferred to 5th Mar Regt Aid station, leaving there in 6/68. I have 2 (too many) Purple Hearts that I received in the bush. I have been a State Farm insurance agent since 1980.
I returned to Vietnam 3/07 - Had a GREAT trip. There is no more Dogpatch, Phu Bai and Hue are very different. Even went to Saigon and Hanoi.

RE code 1A. go figure. anyway i still love the corps although i have my qualms about some of the people in it. semper fi to the most decorated battalion in the corps.

Joined Golf 2/5 at Chu lai.. Who can forget hill 69. end of Sep.66 as an A/R man. Operation Praire, Praire2, was there a Praire3 ?. Operation Mississippi. Got Trenchfoot,..then south to An Hoa. Wasn't that landing on the dirt air field a real rush..heh..heh. Then on to Phu loc 6. There was no bridge then....was there?Got shot in the left leg Dec. 19,1966...what a golden BB for a Christmas present. I was told that I was the first man to shoot a VC in a night ambush in the DMZ....Would not admit to it..then. But 20 years later I accepted the fact. I guess it had something to do with crossing the line. Sgt. Dawson was killed in the same ambush that got me. Frost had the firing mechanism on his LAW blown up under the skin of his upper arm. Fire team leader...some Lcpl. I don't remember got one of his legs almost shot off. He was behind me. That ambush got about half of first squad that day. Dawson, Crumb, Daniel Day(Friend), Frost, Pierce, Thomas,Mad Dog Joe Madruga( Good Guy ). I don't remember all the rest.
I Really would like it if I could contact some of the old squad. In many ways I was a fool in Vietnam, and I was also scared,...But it was also the bravest that I have ever been in my life. I will always remember that I was a Marine..In combat...and for a very short time in my life that I walked the earth as a very dangerous person.

Served in E,2/5 in 1956 and 57 as a rifleman and BAR man. At the time that I was with E,2/5, we had a Battalion Commander by the name of Codispoti who believed in long grueling force marches. I always remember the toughskin that the corpsmen would apply to our feet. I also chuckle ocassionally when I remember how our company, upon returning to Camp Margarita, would have the assigned Company drummer drum break out the drum from the jeep trailer and drum us back into the company area.
It was amazing how a lot of us would quit limping because of blistered feet and smartly march back into the company area. Can't forget the atom bomb test either at Desert Rock, Nevada where I served as a Radiological Monitor. It sure made all of us appreciate how terrible the use of atomic weapons could be.
I retired out of the 2nd Division in July 1980, but always fondly remember my first tour of duty with E,2/5. A great company. I often wonder what ever happened to Pvt White who was also a BAR man who preferred to stay out in the boondocks rather than go on liberty. He had served in Korea and was one of the "Chosen Frozen".

I spent my entire tour with 3rd plt, Echo Co. 2/5. Early on I was with a rifle squad, but later was assigned to the m-60 gun section. I arrived in country in April 1968 and departed in May 1969. I recall Jack Koon, Glissen?, Tony Lugo,Umberto Espinoso, Quatte (twin), Deaton, Mouse, Gilman, Royster. I will always remember those that gave it all - Doc Heller, Sonny Howell and Smitty among others.

I have been diagnosed with Cancer and had a few operations at "UH"" University Hospitals Of Cleveland, Ohio called Ireland Canter Center. I am not sure if there is any correlation of my cancer Squamas cell carcinoma/surgery Neck dissection; Modified radical, radiation therapy and chemo therapy; I suspect that 'Agent Orange' contamination contributed in some way, and that the cigarettes put in our C-Rations caused the damage - which I became addicted to up until 1995, and was a major factor. I was CO of E-2-5 from early July through the end of Sept. 1967. As senior company commander; I was involuntarily transferred to the 1st mar div staff as the industrial relations officer for over 1600 Vietnamese nationals working for units of the division. My memories of E-2-5 include: 43 days of Phu Loc(6), Liberty Bridge and Road, VC ambush of G Co. Patrol near An Hoa, Operation Ballistic Charger II, and many brave marines and corpsmen. Lt. Tuitle, became CO upon my departure and was later a KIA with a cap unit.
I left VN in Jul. 1968 and left the Corps as a Major in 1970. Since then, I have been a public schools teacher and principal in the same school district and will retire in June 1999. I believe those responsible for the establishment and maintenance of this website are to be commended. It is an honor and a continual source of pride to have been associated with those men who fought and served in Echo Company, 2nd BN, 5th Marines. They were truly this country's finest.My dad told me I should post something on some of the 2/5 message boards. I uploaded the home movies he took while in Vietnam as Company Commander of E-2-5 from about June of 67 to about December (he left the company late in 67 for a desk job in Hue City). A reply to Arthur Villalobos' brother.
Victor: I'm sorry, I can't say that I remember that name. I have tried to forget a lot of things for many years. I have forgotten a lot of names, except, ones that were close to me. Some things you can't forget. I mostly stayed with my fire team which was your brother and John Contreras. This was from first part of Jan 1969 to first part of May 1969. The fire teams stayed very close since we had to work well together.
My first operation when I joined your brother was a company sweep up a mountain searching for the enemy. Our operations were always to engage the enemy and destroy. Most of the time it was platoon size, squad size or even smaller size operations. The three platoons split up at the base of the mountain, I happened to be point man for our platoon up the mountain. It seemed to me like the new guy was either point or tail end Charlie. I remember that one of the other two platoons had a point dog [a German Sheppard]. Anyway, I was point, your brother Arthur behind me and John Contreras behind him. When we got to the top of the mountain, We happened to spot what looked like a recon enemy group down below coming right up the trail on the other side of the mountain. We immediately set up L shape around the trail in an ambush position. The three of us were on the small end of the L at the far side of the mountain top.
I remember thinking, this can't be, two days in country, It's like the movies, too easy. We waited frozen for what seemed like an eternity for the enemy to come up the trail, when all of a sudden all hell broke loose to the right of us. We, of coarse, hit the ground. I don't know how we were not hit by all that fire power, however, I remember hearing and seeing the rounds hitting the vegetation around us. Anyway, not knowing how this could have happened, we had no choice but to hold our position.
When all the shooting stopped and all the yelling and screaming started, we found out that the platoon that had the point dog, somehow, [not good communication between platoons, I guess], came up the trail behind us, close enough to our ambush position where the dog must have signaled in his own way that there were enemy hidden, and the platoon opened up on us by mistake.
Arthur was always in great spirits even though he had already been wounded, I believe in the stomach, a few months before Jan 2, 1969 when I got there.
I have never told anyone any of my Vietnam experiences for many reasons including, not being understood. Not even my wife or son, maybe someday, however, you and your family made the ultimate sacrifice and I think you understand.
You may want to ask Walter Allen if he remembers this incident. This might tell us when he got there. It sounds to me that he was at the May fire fight with Arthur.

- I was a Corpsman with 2nnd platoon "E" Co. from the end of April '67 through December '68 when I rotated to the B.A.S. I was in several forward B.A.S. locations (eg; the railroad tunnel) until Tet. I was then shipped back to Phu Bai and finally transported to the B.A.S. in Hue (it took awhile before we could get in to Hue-nothing flying because of weather, etc.)where I was furthur assigned to 1st platoon "G" Co. I have two sons - Tom (32) and Tim (29). I'm a game warden in Wisconsin, getting ready to retire. Am interested in corresponding with Marines from the unit who were there with me.
I am proud to say that I served as a 'grunt' with Echo Co, 2/5 in Viet Nam. We did a lot of humping and had out share of misery. In one period alone, we spent over 100 days in the bush. We have reunions once in awhile, so look us up on Facebook and join us for one!

Since leaving Camp Pendleton 32 years ago I've been working for Lockheed-Martin Missiles and Space Co. I'm working in an electrical design group and hope to retire in about 3 to 5 more years. I have three children, 2 daughters and a son, all ready for college. I live in San Ramon, Ca., which is approximately 25 miles from San Francisco. Back in 1964 when I first arrived at Camp Margarita, 2nd Bn 5th Mar (E Co.), many of us trained and stayed together for about a year and a half before going overseas. Once we reached Okinawa we were assigned to 3rd Bn 3rd Reg 3rd Div (If my memory serves me right). Soon after our arrival in Okinawa we were rushed off to Viet Nam where we were deployed at the airbase in Da Nang. Again, after about a month or more later, some of us were reassigned to other units. A handful of us were sent to I Co. 3rd Bn 3rd Reg 3rd Mar. where we stayed until our tour ended. Since so many of us were separated after arriving in Nam it is unknown what had become of our many friends and comrades from the original 2 nd Bn 5th Mar (E Co.). So hopefully anyone out there reading this can respond to let us know.

Served with Echo Co. in Nam May- October 1968. Got hit with the same mortar round that got Pierce M. and others. Spent 11 mos in Chelsea Naval Hosp. having the peices put back together so they could discharge me.
I have limited recall of my time in country.I'm in treatment for PTSD presently. So some things are coming back to me.I drowned my memories and feelings for 40 odd years.This site is breaking my heart all over again. I was there and had to watch with others as Foxtrot got Naped from the air by friendlies.Other events, names and places stay just out of reach in some kind of grey fog, except,of course, for the nightmares. If anyone remembers me and can help jar some memories loose for me, give me a shout.

I arrived at An Hoa near the end of April 1967 I was a "Grunt" and had worked my way up to squad leader 2nd,squad 2nd, Plt. when we moved North to Phu Bi. I was W.I.A Feb. 3rd 1968 at Troi Bridge, hit by 4 ak 47 rounds. I spent a total of 8 months in hospitals. If any body has any pictures of Troi Bridge I sure would like to see them, I have none. I was a USMC Mine and Booby Trap Detection Dog Handler working out of the 3MP Battalion Da Nang in Vietnam 1970, My dogs name's was Missy 7K37. We were assigned on TAD orders to the 2nd Bn 5th Marines on several occasions. We walked point on several occasions through the Arizonia Territory with the 5th. We were with E company 2/5 at the defense of Liberty Bridge July 1970. We walked the point on security patrols around Liberty Bridge while the Regimental Headquarters was being evacutated. We also walked the point up Charlies Ridge several times.

I was a machine gunner 0331 there was an other marine that went with 2/5 with me his name was morras he to was a 0331. My ser# 2249414. I have PTSD and find it hard to remember any one and that hurts me very much. I was in country for 13 mo and walk out with a purple heart. but like most of us never been the same. I'm married have children and grand kids, but most of the time i stay by my self. I go to the VA once a week to a group like me. Its hard to beleve i was there in 66&67 I should be greatful i made it and lived so long, but I cant seem to. it's guilt I'm here and there not, I'm sorry for going on. I believe, if my memory serves me correctly, that I served in An Hoa Vietnam just outside of DaNang, in Echo 2/5. This was from 2/13/70 until I got hit on 6/25/70. Then stationed at Camp Lejeune (C-1/2) for six months, then spent last two years at Marine Barracks 8th&I in Washington, DC.

Echo, 2/5, 1st Marine Div. 2nd Platoon in 8/1970-3/1971. I was on "Liberty Road" between "An Hoa" and then sent to LZ Baldy. I remember Missouri, Sweet Water, Mississippi can anyone tell me their real names? Also Sgt. Ski., Platoon Captain was Charles Hamman, Chuck Garrison, Kenneth Goodwin, Alfred Landreth, and Larry Martel. Looking for anyone that might remember me my nickname was "Pity Pat" I was the tail-end-charley that carried all the ammo. and was the last one that always jumped out of the helicopters. I am trying to find the Corpsmen that were there during my time. I was injured on Sept. 1970 the day Lcpl Jim Scriver was KIA by a denoted booby trap and Alfred Landreth received the Silver Star. I was WIA that day and was up for a Purple Heart and Bronze Star but refused them at that time. The Military Awards Branch said if I could find the corpsman that treated me that day and other witnesses they would give me them now. All I remember was we called them "Big Doc and Little Doc" I am working on my service connect claims and need help. I have the Unit Rosters for the month of Sept. 1970 but there are over 200 hundred names on them. It is taking a long time to locate men from the 2nd Platoon. I have located Don McGaugh, Tim Rider, Michael Botkins, Dave Graves and Sgt. Ski, Chuck "Butch" Guidice and Jim Boardman. I thank them for their help.

I just read the web site. Great to hear from my old CO Capt Blessing. Remember the cook out at the resivoir? It was great. I was with 2/5 in 1967. Was seriously wounded May 10, 1967 in Antenna Valley. I'm still looking for Terry Robie my squad leader. He saved my life that day. Also would like to hear from any of the other guys in second platoon, especially Doc Theodorvich. Seving with the Best of the Best will be something I'll Never forget.

I was with 60's mortars from Feb.'67 until March '68. I humped on Operations Newcastle, Union I, Union II, Arizona and Swift and also served at My Loc, Phu Loc 6 and the Coal Mines. I rotated while at Troi Bridge south of Hue just as Tet shot its' wad. (Get Some!).

I served with 3rd platoon,Echo CO. from 17 September 1967 to Oct 1968. I was a rifleman in L/Cpl David Wood's fireteam, Cpl Gary Mitchel was the Squad leader, Sgt Berry was the Platoon Sgt the Lt was Lt Moore. Gary Mitchel was probably one of the best squad leaders to serve in the Nam,He taught me to read a map,compass,and to spread it the fuck out!!!!! after acouple of months in a fireteam, I became aradioman for Cpl Mitchel and replaced Cpl Gary McGuire as the PLT Radioman when he rotated. I humped a prc-25 for Lt Cauldwell then Lt McConnell until April of 1968 when I was Wounded. Stormy Ware was Killed , Several others were wounded also. Medivaced to Youkuska,Japan with a gut and leg wound. I returned to RVN in May of 1968 and became a ammo humper in the third platoon Gun Squad. Cpl Felix was the squad leader and L/Cpl Medarios (spelling)was my fire team leader.Dan Randolph, Lugo,Johnson,were in the squad.Attrition moves one up the ranks in a gun squad ,Ammo humper, A Gunner, Gunner, Team Leader, Squad Leader and rotate the fuck out of the Nam, October 1968.I burned Shit at AnHoa to get out of the bush 5 days before i rotated me and Jerry Lubinaw .Doc Lubenow was 3rd plt corp man for 6 months and a great corpman he was He was up and running every time shit hit the fan,which seemed like always. Docs are my heros, Fuckin A!!! Seems the are alot of names missing on the rooster. After fighting ceased, on mine clearing details with 1st Engineer Bn. Trying to locate "Trigger Jack", Leo Kelly and Bill Sterns, or someone who might know if they survived the war. 22 years in the Hospital Corps, retired a Master Chief in 1971. Qualified chief-of- the- watch on submarine, SSBN 600. Made a few trips to Vietnam. Last duty station Naval Dispensary Complex, Washington, D.C., fiscal & supply, Arlington Annex (HQ Marine Corps).

Matthew Ruden's tour started on 11/20/67 and ended on 11/03/68 when he was killed in a friendly fire incident along with several other marines. I believe at one time he was serving in the first platoon of E company. He carried a radio for at least part of his tour.
Those in our family who were alive to know him (not me) miss him every day. We often discuss how ourlives would be different today if he had made it home.
I am working on a project to memorialize his service and life. I am going to digitize his letters and souveniers from his life and service so everyone in the family can have them. I would love to include stories that anyone who served with him in boot camp or Vietnam may have of him. It looks like there were some crazy times on R&R from pictures he sent back. I was with ECHO 2/5 from 9/1/70 - 2/71. Joined the company out on Liberty road. I can't remember the name of the hill we were on, but it was on the left about half-way to the bridge. I was a SGT 1st PLT E Co. This was my second tour. My first was with D 1/1, M 3/3 and F 2/3, AUG 65-SEP 66. I shipped out with D 1/1 aboard the USS Lenaway an APA Troop Transport. We made a beach landing at DaNang, then boarded 6Xs and headed to the old French fort west of Freedom Hill. I was 17 at that time and they were pulling us out of Nam. I was transfered to M 3/3 at the bulk fuel site near DaNang. They cauht you with me and five others and we were sent to the rock and joined up with F 2/3. DEC 65 we made a beach landing in Chu Lia. In between tours I was in 5th Recon, Camp Horno, Camp Pendelton. Then Marine Barracks Alameda, CA. Pissed of the COL and he sent my ass back to Nam.

I am proud to have served with so many outstanding Marines during my tour of duty, Capts. Blessing and Kinder, Lt. Long, Sgts. Clark, Parker and Urrutia, Cpls. Curt Parsons and Gribbons, Jeff Eng, Muster, Jim Erickson, Richard Lawson, Leslie Sealy, Tully Ellis, Westover, Kimble, Medlin, Crone, and Dan "Shifty"Sciffbauer. We, the living, are duty bound to honor the memory and deeds of our fallen Marines, Lt. Bertolozzi, Larry Lewellen and Cruz. Cruz was a battalion engineer on a road sweep I was leading out of Liberty Bridge who was killed by a sniper in the same area as Lewellen, perhaps by the same sniper.
On the morning of 1Aug67, the simultaneous departures of the road sweeps went smoothly, as planned. The sweeps were to routinely clear the road of mines and booby traps to the midpoint connecting the two outposts, Golf Co. from An Hoa and Echo from Liberty Bridge. A half hour later, Echo Co. Marines heard the irruption of gunfire in the direction of An Hoa, followed shortly by a radio message to Sgt. Urrutia. We ran in the direction of the gunfire, hearing it die down to dispersed and intermittent shooting. We spread out as we neared the ambush site expecting hostile enemy action. All was quiet, too quiet, moving forward desperately looking for signs of life from the bullet riddled Marines. All thirteen were dead and after seeing their faces understood the intent of the intermittent shooting. The VC had swept through and murdered our wounded Marines with a fatal shot to the head as they fled. Among the dead were PFC Thomas Blystone and Lt. Paul Bertolozzi. Blystone was a tall, wiry Golf Co. Marine with a panther tattoo on his right forearm, and a member of my bootcamp squad. Lt. Bertolozzi was our executive officer on his way to Liberty Bridge to pay Echo Co. Marines. He lay on his back on the engineers"4-wheel supply mule where he had fallen. The payroll was intact in a steel ammo box next to his body undiscovered by the VC in their hasty get away.
After the bodies, equipment and weapons were retrieved and loaded by battalion Marines and on their way back to An Hoa, Sgt. Urrutia ordered me and my fireteam to set up an ambush at the site and to stay put until I was relieved. We were left without a radio and after darkness fell made our way back to My Loc 2, when it had become obvious we had been forgotten.
Operations New Castle and Union I & II took place in the spring and summer of "67, with one of the outstanding actions of Union II for Echo 2/5 taking place on July 4th at the southeast end of Antenna Valley. We searched the west and north ends of the valley the previous two days for the enemy and failed to lure them out to fight. It was late afternoon when we encamped on a small, defensible knoll where we were treated to steak and ice cream by battalion via helicopter delivery to celebrate the holiday. Settling down to enjoy our one decent meal in a week, a burst of harassing enemy fire sent us scrambling for cover. Darkness fell and the tension was numbing, not knowing where or what type of attack would follow. Out of the stillness of the night, someone yelled out, "Look at the coal mine, it's getting hit! "The coal mine was a hilltop outpost, and the explosive blasts looked like a 4th of July fireworks show in the distance. The eye riveting display was cut short by Captain Blessing"s command, "Saddle up, we"re moving out! "The adrenalin charged force march undertaken on 4Jul67 in pitch black darkness to relieve the beleaguered Marines of Fox 2/5 at Nong Son is a feat etched in the collective memories of the Marines who were there, and exemplary of the go anywhere, anytime actions of Echo Co. 2/5 led by Captain Blessing.
On 8Aug67, I was ordered to lead a fireteam ambush near My Loc 2 after we had abandoned the outpost the previous week. While moving to a better position at the site, I tripped a booby trap. I was medevaced to DaNang, followed by treatment on the USS Sanctuary, surgeries and rehab at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital, CA, and medically discharged on 28Jun68.

My father, Luther Q. Scott (Scotty) was a Navy Corpsmen attached to the Company E, 2nd Bat., 5th Regiment, 1st Division from sometime after 12/1944 to when he was evacuated from Okinawa on about 5/1. I have been trying to research his service during this period. His service record also refers to "Pioneer Brigade" to Palalu/Pauvau, can someone tell me if that brigade was part of the 2/5? Or what?

He had the fortune, or miss fortune to run into my home town buddy Master Gunnery Sergent Danny Burke, While riding his bike with Rolling Thunder. Charles was a state side Cpl. When he arrived in Viet-Nam in JAN'68 and was with Echo through tet'68 until DEC'68 when he was wounded. In our short conversation he said he was still with ECHO when Napalmed in NOV'68. I went out with G 2/5 as forward observer from September 1966 till July 1967. Remember the marchs into Antenna Valley and all the posters. Spent Christmas with 2nd platoon while we set up security on some island east of Pho Loc 6 protecting a downed chopper and I remember the men who died there. Remember the times at the coal mines. I don't remember any names. Other than I think the EX was Capt. English. My call sign was Casandra 63. My second tour I was with 1st 8 inch in AnHoa Sept 69 to Sept 70, then had to do what I dreaded, clean all the equipment so it could be shiped back to the world. We left country in either late September or early October '70. Got out in June 1973, have a son who went into Kuwate with E-3/3 on Operation Desert Storm, my brother in-law was killed on October 22, 1968 outside of DaNang. James Reddington, E-2-5, lost his life in that very same action. After many years of searching Joe and I were able to Locate Jimmy Reddington's final resting place in Scranton, Penna. For more then 10 years Joe and I have made a pilgrimage twice a year to Scranton and maintained and decorated his grave. Sometime after Fox got over run at Nong Son in Jul 67, we went up to Phu Lac (6). While there I became the plt radio operator. In Sep 67, went H&S S-3 (Operations). Made Auburn, Hue, Baxter Gardens, Houston I, II, & III. Rotated in Jul 68. Served second tour with M/3/4 as Staff Sergeant & plt cmdr of 1st plt. Highest enlisted grade was Gunnery Sergeant (at age 28) Left active duty in May, 1979 as CWO-2. I am now a CPA in Flagstaff, AZ and work on ski patrol at Snowbowl in the winter time.

I served with G 2/5 from Dec 66-Jan 68 and thank God - I missed TET. Yet, during my tour, I lost two squads to ambush and booby-traps along with several suicides. On no less than two occasion, I changed my mind about accompanying patrols and yet, both units were annihilated while I lived! On November 7, 1967 [0605 hrs] - a young Marine named with my SAME name was reported KIA - but I was the one suspected killed in battle. Why was I spared? I don't know!
In fact, our battalion lost nearly 10-12 dead Marines to every "confirmed" enemy dead! Perhaps some of you experienced greater victories; I just don't recall them! "Body counts" were somewhat exaggerated! I can only go by what my Marines experienced, and no other!
I began as a machine-gun section leader; was promoted as the weapons platoon commander and eventually as a rifle platoon commander [Nov-Dec 67] for a short time prior to rotation [Jan 68']. There was a chance for a battlefield promotion to Lieutenant IF I accepted an extension to Hue City. No thank you!
I returned to Vietnam in 1969 [after being demoted to Corporal following [drinking/fighting offense in Japan] to serve as a Recon team leader and platoon sergeant with 3rd Recon Bn. Although my first tour in "Nam" was TOUGHER, the second was "hairier" in that the gooners used to approach within feet of our "harbor sites."
While I may have lost more Marines in the first tour, we managed to gain some vindication in the second tour! I lost no teams, and we [6 men] managed to kill 75-100 of the bastards!
For the next 16 years, I remained in the Corps and ultimately transferred to the Military Police/Investigative/Intelligence Fields and retired as a LDO Captain in 1986 with three college degrees, and a Deputy Provost Marshal.
Presently, I work as a Security Director and have been employed within the federal intelligence/investigative industries - being recruited by both the CIA/FBI.
There is rarely a day that I do not remember those who lost their lives with Golf Company 2/5 or 3rd Recon Bn. The time now approaches nearly a generation [35+ years], but the haunting memories remain forever fresh! I can still still see the face of the first Marine that I witnessed killed in action - a young, African-American Marine shot once in the heart [center flak jacket], but the look of shock on his face still plagues me .....
Recent movies such as "Saving Private Ryan", "Black Hawk Down" and "We Were Soldiers" brought NON-STOP tears to my eyes, and forced me to remember a Vietnamese War that the United States "Americanized."
Nevertheless, I salute all of you who fought bravely at An Hoa and surrounding valleys. As a young USMC sergeant who did not have the foggiest idea of what he was doing, I hope that I did not let any of you down too badly!
IF I knew THEN what I knew now; IF I possessed the character THEN than I have now; IF I had the mind-set THEN that now permeates my soul; THEN may God have had mercy on them --- for I would have had NONE!!!
I have no doubt that we were better, stronger and could have whipped their ass in all face-to-face battles, but Marines are often at the disposal of the politicians! And for that, I am sorry!
How I wish that America had the resolve to win instead of caving into the enemy. Nevertheless, I salute you all!

Ashau Valley during 67-68. I was with H Co. During an ambush, we were sent to retrieve weapons ans documents from some VC that we had killed. While crossing a bridge, Larry Lavarovich from Brooklyn, NY was killed instantly. I cannot remember exactly where we at. I would like to hear from others that remember the bridge incident. While not technically a member of 2/5, I was an FO with E-2/5 for six months (with Capt. Pat Blessing) and the Bn Fire Support Coordinator (with Major Dick Easu) for three months. My unit was E-2/11 co-located with 2/5 at An Hoi and the Cau Dai pennsula (the Tunnel). During Tet 68 my battery supported 2/5 as it fought its way through Hue City.
I rotated back to the states in May 68, reported for I&I duty in Providence RI where I remained for almost 30 years. I stayed on active duty for 5 years and in the Reserves for another 22, retiring in late 92 as a full bird. On occasion, I meet Marines who served with 2/5 such as George Hoffman, Jim Doyle, Pat Blessing, and John Nelson. I have many old pictures of the An Hoi camp which bring back many memories, most of which are positive.

I served with Echo 2/5 third Herd from July '70 until the 5th Marines were pulled out of country in the spring of '71. I was then transferred to the First Marines with the S-2 scouts. With Echo 2/5 I served at Liberty Bridge,in the Arizona, then to LZ Baldy, Happy Valley, Antenna Valley, the Que Son Mountains. It was an extraordinary time of hardship and privation, and the expectation of explosive violence. The friendships and the camradarie were the glue which held that maddening time sane,and I value those men which showed extraordinary courage and stamina through it all. It is an honor to be part of so select a group of men as Echo 2/5.

My question to them is how many if any have got an agent orange cancer. If so please contact me and maybe I can help or we can bat ideas around on whose got the best care facility in there area. I have been fighting cancer for the last 7 years and they are finally saying it is an agent orange cancer. I was WIA on Dec. 16 and Medivac to Philly Navel Hosp. and discharged in Aug. of "71" (Que Son Mountains). Also, has there been a reunion lately and are there any comming up?

Was the CO of E 2/5 from August '68 to March '69. We did operations out of An Hoa in the Arizona Territory, the Phu Locs and most notably the relief of the Thong Duc Special Forces Camp in October of '68. Took Hill 100 after intense artillery and CAS and, a few days later, repulsed a heavy night attack by the NVA (at great cost to them and us). |
I am very proud to have served in combat with 2/5 -- one of the most prestigious units in the Corps. 2/5 has always been in the lead. It was 2/5 that was in the great final offensive against the 'Huns' in the Great War (1918). 2/5 was the first American unit to attack the Japanese in WW II (7 August 1942 -- Guadalcanal). In Korea, 2/5 made the landings at Inchon (15 Sept 1950). And 2/5 led the attack into Hue City during Tet. There is no other battalion in the Marine Corps that can make all of these claims. What an honor it is to have served with you.

I served with Echo 2/5 3rd platoon from 12/30/66 to 7/11/67 as a rifleman. The worst day of that 6 months was March 23, 1967 on operation New Castle. James Reddington (Red) and Lt. John Fuller Jr. were KIA and everyone else in the squad was wounded or killed in an ambush.
On 7/11/67, after a short stint in sick bay, I was riding on an ammo truck back to the coal mine to join Echo Company when our truck hit a land mine. I got a broken back and a 3rd purple heart and was off to Japan(Naval Hospital) Out of the Corp in 1969 and back to college. I retired in January of 1999 after 25 years as a cop in Burnsville, MN a suburb of Mpls/St.Paul.
I have over 100 photos of our time in Nam if anyone is interested. Woiuld love to hear from any I served with!

I started out as a regular Hollywood Marine Plt. 1091 out of MCRD San Diego,. Went through Infantry Training at Pendleton,went to Recon School in the Fall of 1969
When I arrived in Danang 1st Recon was full so the sent me out to 5th Marines on Chistmas Day 1969. I was assigned to Echo Co 3rd Plt Alpha Squad. My first operation was out to Goi Noi Island in January of 1970. Then they sent me to Demolition School so, now I got to blow things up what more fun could a 20 year old want to have.
I walked a lot of Point found, lots of Boobs. When my buddy Paige Calhoun tripped a Boob in May of 1970 I took over as Squad Leader. Went about everywhere Football Island, The Arizona, Liberty Bridge, Road Security, through all of the Phu Nauns and Phu Locs, we were working off Hill 34 when they shut down An Hoa I think we were the last Marines out of the Valley.
We were sent to LZ Baldy after An Hoa and worked up in Mountians around Hill 956 in the Fall of 1970 messing with the NVA. I was medivaced out on my rotation date in December 1970.

You did a tough job when no one else would. I know it was the toughest job I ever had.
