Allin, Dale

Hospital Corpsman in the second platoon of Hotel 2/5 in 1967. Lt. Pendell was platoon leader, Staff Sergeant Beauqua was second in command in the platoon. The company commander (Captain), who has several gaping scrapnel wounds in his arms, was from Philadelphia, but ironically rang my doorbell in 1982 to announce he had moved here to Portland. However, I haven't seen nor heard from him since that time. Base camp was An Hoa, but our platoon spent most of its time along the Nong Song River at the North end of the A Shau Valley.

I got to Vietnam in August of 1968. I was assigned to Hotel Co 2/5 in the later part of August of 1968. I was wounded in Operation Henderson Hill on November 1st, 1968. I was hit 3 times by an AK-47 and choppered out to hospital. Ended up in The Great Lakes Naval Hospital, in Illinois, until I was discharged from USMC with medical discharge in May of 1969. I remember some buddies from Hotel Co 2/5 that I only knew as "Snake"," Maggot", & "Rat". I remember a Sgt Parker & kinda remember him getting hit the same day that I did. My nick name was "DeadEye". Have always thought of all those Marines that I served with in the Rice Paddies of Viet Nam in 1968, but never knew how to contact any of them until I recently found this websight.

Salute to my old company from Vietnam. When I was WIA 11-01-1968 & was air lifted back home to Great Lakes Naval Hospital for some recovery time. Any old H Co 2nd Bn 5th Marines from Sept 1968/ Oct 1968 out there??

Went over with 3/5 in Mar 66. Transferred to 2/5 at Hill 69. Started with E co, then to H 2/5. Went on a couple hour Sparrowhawk and ended up opening Con Tien. (left all my pers possessions at Hill 69 and never saw them again) Came to An Hoa in Oct 66 and was put in the S4, H&S. Rotated back to CONUS apr 67, just before the **** hit the fan. Was commissioned 3 times, never could get it right I guess. Retired in Feb 81 and have enjoyed life as a retarded Marine ever since.
This web page made my day. Kudos to WEB MARINE. I've waited a long time to see something on the net about the greatest outfit in the Corps, 2/5!!! I've tried in the past to contact Marines that were closer than brothers to me back then and managed to locate a few.(Gary Deyak,Robert Crum,Chas Robinson,Mike Carey, Pat Blessing, just to name a few.) I have some pictures that I will forward, if anyone wants.
Anybody remember the Plt mascots we captured in Antenna Valley? (2d Plt H co 2/5)
I would love to hear from anybody that I knew.

I would like to thank Jerry Doherty, John Lafley, Wadley, Jessmore, Hamilton, Woodruff, Ybarra, and all of the other Hotel Marines I have seen since the war. Our country may be in grave danger now, but you brave men and your memory is the inspiration that gives me hope. I think you all were heroes even if your fellow citizens were too stupid to recognize it. We have to follow Capt. Doherty's example and "Keep on keeping on". Diane's and our families' prayers are with all of you always. John Culbertson

I was with supply company. During Tet 1968 I and several others from our section were assigned to Hotel Co. I was there during the arrival into Hue city in Feb 1968 starting at the Medical School and going from house to house for the next 7-10 days until we reached the outskirts of the city. Then reinforcements replaced us. Michael Osuch kept me alive during the whole encounter. I went back to battalion supply and we moved back to An Hoa where I completed my tour.

I have recently been having problems since the invasion of Iraq and went to a VA consuelor for advise regarding post traumatic stress. She was very helpful however, she said we were in an area exposed to Agent Orange. Is this true?

I have to confess that I am not an official 5th Marines member. I was a radio operator for FO teams out of 2/11. We fired support for 2/5. I got hooked up with the Marines web page and got messages from guys in 2/5 who suggested I check the page for names I might recognize. Sorry I entered from the "back door."

Had the pleasure of being on some of the biggies, like Mead River, Taylor Common, Muskogee Meadow, Phu Loc 6, An-Hoa, over 50 combat patrols as both a fire team leader and a Squad Leader. Cleared Liberty road many a morning outside of Phu-Loc 6. Remember in great detail I lost my friend Donald Blackston, and I did make a trip to Washington to trace his name on the wall.. I joined Hotel Company 2/5 from 3/5, just before the Company went north on PRAIRIE, in early Fall,1966. I served mainly as 3rd Platoon Commander with Hotel throughout PRAIRIE. Then down to the AN HOA region, where we subsequently made MISSISSIPPI in antenna valley; and numerous patrols of all kinds.
On the first day of LINCOLN, my eleventh operation, on the last of my many combat patrols, I was severely wounded, and almost died, on January 9. My radio operaotr, Bob Meyer, was mortally wounded next to me. And our Platoon Corpsman, Jerry Holub, was seriously wounded at the same time, as well.
For the only time I even know of, the helicopter pilot, after trying to land in the hot zone, lost his nerve and took off rapidly toward An Hoa. The men I served with then more or less spontaneously stood up, called the helo pilot and said, in effect, "Whoaa! Where are you going? It's not bad down here; look, we're all standing up." Our Company Gunnery Sergeant, Gunny Husak, even removed his flak jacket and skivvy shirt, and said, "Try to land the helicopter on top og the guy with his shirt off, where it's safe"[!]. Our Company Commander, Captain Jerry Doherty, told some of the men nearby that they'd have to stand up, but they did this mostly voluntarily, and there was a quick ripple effect thereafter. Had the men not done this, then I would surely have perished. SEMPER FIDELIS.

McFarlane, John W. (from a childhood friend)

I am sorry I was not a member of 2/5, but couldn't figure how else to post a message. My childhood best friend PFC John W. McFarlane 1st Plt. H Co. 2d Bn.5th Mar Div.was a member. John and I were best friends and grew up together from the 7th grade. We experienced Boy Scouts, discovered girls and just enjoyed our innocent lives as kids do. He was killed April 11, 1968. I arrived in Country 1 year later and continued to serve 33 years with the Army & Army reserve. Today is Nov 11, 2003 Veterans Day and I thought it appropriate to reflect upon my friend. I am trying to locate the Combat After Action Report for his unit for April 11, 1968. I understand the unit was engaged in operations outside of Hue. I would be interested in corresponding with anyone that could help me in this endevor. Thanks to you all for your service "Welcome Home Brothers".

Anyone remember our first night, on the beach. Then being sent to Hill 10, only to be greated by S/Sgt Guiterrez the next morning (after our first firefight). I still remember him climing the hill and yelling "Good Morning Veterans." I remained with H 2/5 until March 1967, 14 Operations later WIA Opeation Tuscaloosa.

Montgomery, James crossRIP 06/04/2013

H Co 2/5 1967 Op Essex casualty. 30 year PTSD veteran with attitude. Been there: done that...survived and still have sense of humor. Semper Fi is life motto. Seeking answers to questions not yet formulated.

From his Daughter: Part of my father died all those years ago in Vietnam. The part that remained went on to have 3 kids and 6 grandchildren. He was loved very much, although part of him was always a mystery to us. It was only in the waning years of his life that we kids began to learn the details of Operation Essex and what he (and you all) went through. Anyone who wants to share their memories of him or their time in Vietnam can email me at smozan@icloud.com. Thank you all for your service to our country. Your sacrifices will always be remembered. Nee, Peter M. (from a fellow Marine)

Though not a member of 2/5, I am a retired Marine, writing on behalf of another Marine friend, Cottrell Fox, who is looking for anyone who knew an Irish-born Marine, Peter Mary Nee, who was KIA with Hotel 2 / 5 in the Arizona Territory on March 31, 1969.

He is currently corresponding with Nee's sister Imelda in Cashel, Ireland with the intention of erecting a proper headstone at his burial site on a hill high above the town of Cashel.

The purpose is to recognize his USMC service and sacrifice. All he currently knows about Peter is listed on the Virtual Wall website. His sister really knows nothing of his time in 2/5.

They would appreciate any info about his time in 2/5 and particularly about the circumstances of his death.

BTW, My friend was a CAP Marine commander at CAP Hotel 8, 3rd Combined Action Group on 1/31/68 when his unit was overrun as a diversion for the attack on Hue.

Hotel 2/5 had been working their area for a month before Tet and a platoon of 2/5 Marines was located about a mile south of their compound when they were overrun and watched as they fought off the NVA by calling arty and in on their own position.

2 / 5 was later ordered to move into Hue from Phu Bai which was about 10 miles north of H-8. Cot was in the hospital with many grunts at Clark and Tripler in Honolulu so his relationship was forged in blood. He would also appreciate any comments from the 2/5 guys who were on that bridge south of his unit that night.

If anyone has any pertinent info, please contact Cottrell Fox by E at cfox@jwterrill.com or call him at: 314 542 2494 (St. Louis MO)

Semper Fidelis,

F. J. Taylor USMC (Ret.)

Just a note to the fellas Larry "triple Nickle" served with. He lost his fight with liver and pancreas problems last summer. I believe he is resting in the Veterans Cemetary in Jacksonville NC. One of the finest friends I ever had. A very proud Marine Viet Nam Vet and a very proud part of Hotel 2/5. Larry always told the story of Hue City and how hard the battle was. He talked of raising a small American flag and how much everyone hated seeing the North Viet Nam flag flying. I worked with Larry for 15 years and miss him a lot. As a former Marine, I just want to say Semper Fi to all the Viet Vets, brothers forever. Steve Tracy 74/78

I was on this site for several years. Asked to be taken off this site when I was going through some tough times with the devils of Nam. The phone calls did not help handling the demonds. If anyone out there knows the names of the other two Marines that were in the jeep with us, or how to contact them, I would be forever in your debt. This has to do with long forgotten awards that were to be given. Now that we're getting on in age, my grandchildren are after me to see whatever happened to them. I arrived at An Hoa in Dec 67 on the same C123 Provider with 2nd Lt. Mike Lambert and GySgt Frank Thomas. I was assigned to 3rd platoon where I became friends with Joe Flaherty from South Boston who died about a year ago. After moving up to Phu Bai with the battalion in Jan 68 I was wounded two weeks before the Tet offensive broke out and medivaced to Guam. After returning to Vietnam in Apr 68 I was assigned to 1st platoon. In Apr and Jun 68 1st platoon operated along Highway One near the Troi River Bridge. The only designated operation that I took part in was Operation Baxter Garden in Apr 68, a seven day sweep of villages and sand dune terrain in the Hue-Phu Bai area. In May 68 I volunteered to attend Vietnamese language school and was send to Camp Butler on Okinawa for four weeks. What a break/skate that was! In Jun 68 I volunteered for the Combined Action Program and was sent to the CAP school at My Khe (aka China) Beach in DaNang in Jul. I finished the last five months of my tour with a CAP unit south of Chu Lai. In Apr 94 I returned to Vietnam with a group of CAP veterans. I have made six trips back to Vietnam since then. I was married to a Vietnamese woman in Saigon in Jul 96 and ironically enough, we honeymooned in Hue. I have been with the Detroit Fire Department for 21 years. Currently serve as a lieutenant in the fire marshal division.

I was a corpsman assigned to Hotel in 1967. Spent lots of grunt time at An Hoa, Phu Loc 6, Liberty Bridge area, coal mine at Non Son, and My Loc 2. I also have an old Hotel company roster from 1967. Only there are lots of names on that list who are also on the wall. Remember Sgt Butler, SSgt Stutes(KIA), Irvin(KIA)Braswell(KIA) Baxter(KIA) Ed Nelson(KIA). Anyone remember the night that Cross got KIA near Red Road near My Loc 2.Does anyone remember when Gary Morris, Mansil Hurlburt, John Witt, and I captured that pig. Lots of stories. Drop me a line. Semper Fi. Doc Ware.

(added 23 May 2002)
Since joining this site I have contacted several Hotel 2/5 members from RVN days. I visited with Wayne Carr, Mansil Hurlburt, Hunton Witt in Orlean, VA June 2001. I also saw Charlie Eddy at the VA hospital, Clarksburg, WV and I am helping him with his Purple heart documentation from a combat wound in RVN of 22 April 67. He got hit by a sniper bullet in the helmet and never got counted as a wound. I was there beside him so I am helping him get his award. This was when Hotel was on a search and destroy mission out past the coal mine area near Nong Son. This same day, Cpl Hyziak, Lcpl Evans, and Doc Goodman got shot as I took care of all. PFC Dennis Baxter KIA on "Tuscaloosa" January 67 is buried here in my hometown as he was a personal friend. He was attached to 3rd plt. John Culbertson has written several books about 2/5 in RVN and they are great. I have some nice pictures when Hotel was at China Beach in 67. I would suggest that if anyone has any pictures of guys in Hotel, please send them to the webmaster so they can be posted. SGT Bud Stutes's (KIA) on Swift 9/10/67) daughter and sister have also contacted me through this web site.

Zidlicky, Jim

I was with H 2/5 '69 - '70. I transferred from Hotel 2/3, 3rd Marines to Hotel 2/5 in August or September '69, until June '70. We were on Liberty Bridge security and an engineer who was making up tnt charges to toss over the side of the bridge fell off the bridge. I was on guard duty on the bridge when he fell. I thought he was clowning at first, but when I realized he couldn't swim I jumped in and brought him to shore. One of the Doc's came down the shore and took him but I never found out who the engineer was. Anybody remember him? the Doc I believe was the head Doc at the time but names are cloudy after 40 years.

Zimmerman, Gregory

My Brother Gregory Neal Zimmerman served in 2/4 and 2/5 Hotel Company Quang Tri from 1969-1970 on his second tour and was wounded in 1970 ending his time in Vietnam. His first tour 1967-1968 was with 1/3, 1/1 and 1/9 Marines in Quang Tri before being wounded with 1/9 in June 1968. If anyone knew him please contact me. I have numerous pictures I inherited from him of Vietnam and would like to forward to anyone who knew him. Sadly to say he survived Vietnam to be killed by a head on crash by a driver crossing the road in 2005. I know he never forgot his time in Vietnam and the individuals he served with.
