VA Drug Vendor Oversight
The House Committee on Veterans' Affairs recently held an oversight hearing entitled "Through the Looking Glass: Return to PPV." In February 2012, ( ... -practices) the Committee held a hearing, which revealed VA's long-standing practice of purchasing pharmaceuticals on behalf of veterans to be in violation of several federal laws through its Pharmaceutical Prime Vendor (PPV). Although improvements to PPV contracting within VA have occurred since late last year, VA has continued to purchase pharmaceuticals off-contract amounting to millions of dollars. New D-Day Memorial Dedicated
Along the causeway to Utah Beach near Sainte Marie Du Mont, France stands a new monument to combat leadership, dedicated June 6, in memory of Maj. Richard Winters, who led paratroopers from the U.S. Army's Company E, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, during the D-Day landings. New VA Clinic Coming to Tampa
The Department of Veterans Affairs has selected University Corporate Park of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., to build a new mental health clinic for Veterans in Tampa, Fla. The project will be completed in the summer of 2013. The contract calls for a 22,300-square-foot, one-story building. Mental health services are now provided at another leased facility adjacent to the James A. Haley VA Hospital. The new clinic, which will be located five miles from the Haley VA facility, will provide services for nearly 148,000 Veterans in Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco, and Polk counties.

Tuscaloosa VA Opens Women's Wing
The Tuscaloosa Veterans Affairs Medical Center at ( has opened a new women's wing for its residential rehabilitation treatment program. The $300,000, eight-bed unit was created based on a need to expand mental health care services for female veterans. The center offers services including job skills training and individual therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, depression and other diagnoses. Warrior Golf Tournament Seeks Applicants
The George W. Bush Presidential Center is seeking applications for its second annual Warrior Open golf tournament to be held in the Dallas-area Sept. 23-25. The 36-hole competition will feature veterans severely wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. Wounded veterans interested in participating in the Warrior Open must submit an application at the Bush Center Warrior Open website at ( by July 16. To qualify, veterans must: have been seriously injured in the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan; be active-duty, retired or honorably discharged; have a verifiable golf handicap index of 20 or less; be able to provide a valid and current Uniform Services Identification Card or separation form DD214; and be able to provide diagnosis certificate completed by a doctor.

Veteran Hiring Fair on June 26
The Veteran Hiring Fair in Detroit, June 26-28, will be a "hiring event." Soldiers and veterans who attend the Veterans Affairs-sponsored event will be able to get interviewed and perhaps, get hired. Soldiers do not need to actually go to Detroit to participate. There are five locations throughout the Army where Soldiers can interview with participating employers via video teleconferencing: Fort Drum, N.Y.; Fort Knox, Ky.; Rock Island Arsenal, Ill.; Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; and Fort Riley, Kan. There will be 100 career coaches available at the event to work with veterans on their resumes and career choices. VA Loan Benefits in Today's Market
The VA program won't deny a loan based solely on a low credit score, and most lenders don't tier interest rates for better scores. The VA program usually looks at only the previous 12 months of credit history, unless bankruptcy, a tax lien or a collections situation factors into your situation. Additionally, the VA home mortgage loan doesn't require a down payment. Department of Veterans Affairs clinicians offer a comprehensive review of the health concerns of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans and practical management guidelines for primary care providers in an article entitled ( Post Deployment Care for Returning Combat Veterans, and published in Journal of General Internal Medicine (JGIM). Veterans in Wisconsin now have access to higher education resources through their mobile devices. The University of Wisconsin System, University of Wisconsin-Extension, and the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) have released a smart phone?friendly version of the ( Veterans Education Portal. Health Care for Ohio Vets
Stars and Stripes reports that about 52,000 military veterans in Ohio younger than 65 either do not have health insurance or are not enrolled in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs health care system, leaving many of them and their families with unmet medical needs or leading them to forgo care because of costs. In Ohio, there are eight VA vet centers, five VA medical centers and 28 outpatient clinics. Most services are available within 25 miles of all Ohio residents. VA Hiring Mental Health Professionals
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is adding approximately 1,600 mental health clinicians as well as nearly 300 support staff to its existing workforce to help meet the increased demand for mental health services.
